Finding a job isn’t easy right now, as we’ve covered in the past. Maybe it’s time to reskill, change direction, and broaden your horizons. So, where do you start? If you’re ready for a change, but don’t know where to go from here, we’ve got a list of emerging industries that might just have a you-shaped hole in them. Read on for all the details.
The Green Energy Revolution
It’s no secret that Scotland is the global leader in offshore wind energy. We practically rival Holland in windmills nowadays thanks to wind farm projects like Seagreen and Neart na Gaoithe. And so far it’s been proven to create thousands of jobs across engineering, project management and marine sciences.
But that’s just the beginning when it comes to green industries in Scotland. There is also the hydrogen economy, which Scotland also pioneers as part of the goal for net-zero. Aberdeen has been transformed into a hub for hydrogen production, offering roles in infrastructure development, energy research, and hydrogen vehicles. And there’s Tidal and Wave energy, which, being an island country with a bunch of offshore industries, we are pretty set up for. Projects like Orbital Marine Power and Nova Innovation, which create wave energy solutions, which in turn, means a lot of jobs in developing industries in Scotland.
The Space Race
Did you know there are space industries in Scotland? NASA has some competition. Sutherland and Shetland in particular are attractive to companies that want to launch satellites for the sake of communication, weather monitoring, and, as you would guess from reading above, environmental tracking.
Meanwhile, in the Central Belt, Glasgow is becoming a Satellite Manufacturing Hub, because it makes more small satellites than any other European city, which is pretty poetic when you think about its history of shipbuilding. “Born too late to explore the world, too early to explore space”? Not in Glasgow.
Look into companies like Clyde Space to get involved in satellite production, space research and systems engineering.
Creative Industries and Digital Media Expansion
Scots being creative is no secret. One of the most long-lasting industries in Scotland is its art, so much so we built a school dedicated to a Glasgow artist. However, if you’ve walked around Glasgow lately, you might have seen a lot of streets taped off and a lot of lights and cameras set up. Scotland is really growing as a film hub. In the city, the folk in Hollywood like our grid street system and architecture that looks like Chicago if you squint. Glasgow has been turned into crime-ridden Gotham city too many times for it to not be offensive at this point.
But even in the rolling Highlands, the film crews keep turning up. Outlander, anyone? Hollywood is coming to Scotland.
What’s more surprising is that gaming is also coming to Scotland. Not only is Dundee the birthplace of Grand Theft Auto, what was once the biggest gaming franchise ever, but the development companies it spawned have grown and expanded into other major Scottish cities. It’s no coincidence that the most viral horror game of 2024 is set and built in Scotland. If you like coding, gaming is in Scotland.
Healthcare and Social Care Modernization
Scotland has a long history of pioneering healthcare. Penicillin, antiseptic surgery, blood transfusions, the ultrasound, and more are just the tip of the iceberg. That hasn’t changed. One of the biggest industries in Scotland is healthcare, where digital health is pioneering. That only makes sense given our reputation for tech being another massive industry in Scotland. Nowadays, Scots are developing telemedicine and health data analytics, where you can work on health informatics, app development and wearable tech.
Conclusion
Maybe it’s time to readdress your CV. A lot of these industries in Scotland do need some speciality education, but we live in a great country where education is more affordable than the rest of the isle. Already got the chops? Maybe now is the time to make the change.
